Review: Reference Tweaks Miracle Wraps

When nenno from Reference Tweaks first contacted me about his Miracle Wraps, I was very intrigued to say the least. I did not totally understand how such a “tweak” could have an impact on the sound, but since different cables with different shielding schemes have sounded different in the past, I agreed to do...

Review: Aktyna ARIS - The Ultimate decoupling feet?

Posted by Amine Slimani on August 24, 2011 at 2:45 PM Comments comments (7)

The Aktyna A.R.I.S. Evo2 are high performance decoupling feet for audio (and video) equipment that transform the vibration generated by the equipment itself and by the outside environment into heat.

Throughout the past three years I have experimented with different coupling and decoupling feet and platforms. While most of them did change the sound of my system, very few did it withou...

In what ways similarly measuring cables and equipment can sound different?

Posted by Amine Slimani on October 20, 2010 at 1:17 PM Comments comments (3)

The idea of writing this article came to me while I was trying to find the right words to explain to head-fier how I felt about the differences between the stock BeyerT1 and the ALO recabled Beyer T1. Since I described the ALO as being smoother sounding than the stock cable, he deduced that the ALO cable was acting as some sort low pass filter. While it is quite explicable, it is far from what I heard. This simple exchange highlighted two things to me: Written communication is obviously trick...

Is there really an audible difference between cables?

Posted by Amine Slimani on October 12, 2010 at 12:46 PM Comments comments (6)

I had initially written the article below as part of headphone cable review, but I thought it could be more helpful by being presented as a separate article since it is in no way related to a specific brand of cables or equipment.

I have to say that I have always been puzzled to see on head-fi people spend thousands of dollars on headphone amps and tubes while dismissing the possibility that a “simple” piece of wire could make any sort of difference at all. ...

Review: Deep Sounds Cables Silver Surfers

I was contacted by Stuart (who had read some of my reviews) a few months ago in order to ask me if I were interested to write a review for his cables. After a few e-mail exchanges I came to understand that Stuart had a longstanding experience in the hi-fi world and in experimenting with different cables.

It took me a little more than expected to finish this particular review, not because there was a la...

About 2 months ago, Alister from Artisan Silver Cables contacted me tosee if I were interested in reviewing their new headphone upgrade cables forthe Sennheiser HD-600 and HD-650. I accepted his proposition with greatpleasure as I was curious to see how the Mark 2 cable compared to the Mark 1that I had been using for the past few months.

Comparison of headphone cable upgrades for the Sennheiser HD-650: Artisan Cable Silver Dream vs. Stefan AudioArt Equinox

The Sennheiser HD650:

I have owned the Sennheiser HD-650 for more than 3 years now and since the time I got them, I have been amazed about their sound quality and the way they scale with better gear.

In my opinion, the biggest weakness of these headphones is their relatively low price. When a non-audiophile buys the Sennheiser hd-650, they probably donR...

Review of the Oyaide DB-510 coaxial cable - An analog sounding digital cable

Posted by Amine Slimani on January 28, 2010 at 11:46 AM Comments comments (1)

Jitter in cables:

The idea of digital cables sounding different from one another will probably shock many people. According to some, “Bits are bits”and either the digital data is perfectly transmitted or there are drops and glitches but there shouldn’t be any “in-between”.

But the reality is different. There are no 1 and 0s running around in a digital cable. Actually, the signal b...
